The Paradox of Grace
If salvation is secured entirely by grace, does that mean we can sin without consequence? Paul anticipated this very question in Romans 6, addressing the believer's relationship with sin in light of their new life in Christ.
In Romans 6:1-2, Paul writes: "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?"
Dead to Sin
Through baptism into Christ, we are united with Him in His death, buried with Him, and raised to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:3-4).
Free from Dominion
"For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace" (Romans 6:14).
Heart Transformation
"You who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart" (Romans 6:17).
The Ongoing Struggle
Despite being freed from sin's dominion, Christians still experience an internal battle. Paul expresses this tension poetically in Romans 7:15-25, describing his own struggle against sin.
Internal Conflict
"For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate." (Romans 7:15)
Desire for Good
"For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out." (Romans 7:18)
Spiritual Warfare
"I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind." (Romans 7:23)
Hope in Christ
"Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:25)
Present Tense Struggle
Is Paul speaking of his pre-conversion experience or his ongoing struggle as a Christian? The evidence suggests he's describing his present experience as a believer.
1
Recognition of Brokenness
"Wretched man that I am!" (Romans 7:24)
2
Cry for Deliverance
"Who will deliver me from this body of death?" (Romans 7:24)
3
Thanksgiving for Christ
"Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Romans 7:25)
4
Ongoing Tension
"So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin." (Romans 7:25)
This final statement before Romans 8:1 reveals Paul's continuing struggle as a believer, making the declaration "There is therefore now no condemnation" all the more powerful.
No Condemnation
The sweetest truth for struggling believers comes in Romans 8:1-2: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death."

Eternal Security
Not "there was no condemnation until you sinned" or "there will be no condemnation if you don't sin"

Present Reality
"There IS now no condemnation" - a continuous present tense reality

Grace-Based
Any other interpretation would revert to works-based righteousness

Assurance
Brings peace to tender-hearted Christians struggling against sin
Life in the Spirit
If Romans 7 depicts the fleshly struggle, Romans 8 reveals the antithesis: life in the Spirit. Every believer has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them, providing all they need for spiritual victory.
Spirit-Minded
"Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit." (Romans 8:5)
Life-Giving
"The Spirit is life because of righteousness." (Romans 8:10)
Resurrection Power
"He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you." (Romans 8:11)
Spirit of Adoption
"You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'" (Romans 8:15)
The Spirit's Help in Our Weakness
While we wait for our final redemption, we do not wait alone. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, especially when we don't know how to pray.

Divine Intercession
"The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words" (Romans 8:26)
Heart Knowledge
"He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit" (Romans 8:27)
God's Purpose
"All things work together for good for those who love God" (Romans 8:28)
Even when we come to the end of our rope with no words to pray—whether from frustration, exhaustion, or fear—the Holy Spirit is praying for us to the Father. What a precious gift is this Holy Spirit who dwells within us!
Eternally Secure in Christ
Romans 8:31-39 offers believers confident assurance that nothing can separate them from God's love. Paul systematically dismantles every possible threat to the believer's security in Christ.

The Challenge
"If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)
The Verdict
"Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies." (Romans 8:33)
The Assurance
"Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:39)
Salvation is a non-refundable and irrevocable gift of divine mercy. While we battle sin daily, we do not fight alone. The same Holy Spirit who raised Christ from the dead now dwells in us, leading, convicting, and empowering us to live in victory.
